The Mapplewell & Staincross Family History Group has been started to help local people study their own family history and genealogy.

It is designed to help people of all capabilities but with particular emphasis being on new starters wanting to know how carry out their own research, but using the library facilities and software.

Stephen Barbar, experienced genealogist and founder of the group, states: “As an informal group we will be able to carryout tasks at a speed that suits the individual.

“This is very important as not only do we have different speeds for learning, but often even the most basic tasks on a computer can appear quite daunting to those unfamiliar with using search engines and any specialist software.

“I am very enthusiastic about this as a ‘hobby’ to the point where I am a member of other genealogy groups in Barnsley.  I am hoping to bring some of their skills and knowledge to Mapplewell,” he added.

The meetings, held in the library, are free but there is a small ‘one-off’ registration fee of £5 for paperwork and registering onto the system, should you want to carryout all your research on the Village Hall premises.

If the group is successful, there may also be opportunities to invite other ‘keynote’ speakers to events held in the Hall.
