One of the longest standing groups using the Village Hall is the History Group.

With more than 20 existing members, the group attracts a number of very different speakers covering not just local history but events that took place throughout the UK over thousands of years. One of the most recent talks (27th February 2018) was on the development of the local canals and waterways network that helped keep industry flowing.

Always open to new ideas our previous programme of events has included Railways and Colliers and the close relationship between the two major entities that kept UK business on track and the coal fires burning. On a more light hearted note, ‘Laughter the Best Medicine’ was a talk given that looked at the more humerous side of history.

We are always looking for new keynote speakers and so if you’re a history buff with a story to tell, email: gould5bs@btinternet.com

At the next meeting we are looking at the Withdrawal of the Romans in 410AD.

If you think history groups are boring, think again. The Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall group are often out visiting sites of interest, with many a coach trip to the likes of Eyam, Wentworth, Oakwell Hall and Castle Howard to name just a few.

This is not a research group. This is a ‘lets get our hands dirty and our mind working’ group that enjoy History as it should be enjoyed. Sociably and by being proactive.

New members are welcome and if you want to find out more about future historical events, email: anitajocelyn@gmail.com

Or Simpy turn up at the next event on the last Tuesday of every month and instead of going ‘back to the future’, make it part of ‘your future to look back’
