WHY PSYCHOTHERAPY?
First of all, let us point out that anyone can benefit from psychotherapy and you don’t have to be professionally referred by a Doctor or Health worker.
The benefit of meeting with a psychotherapist is that it gives you the opportunity to talk to a trained professional in this specific field, which, when done right, allows you to explore your concerns, thoughts and emotions in an open manner. This, by its nature, will help you to understand and improve your own mental health. It is also less of a ‘conflict’ than trying to discuss similar issues with family, friends or work colleagues who could be part of the problem – without realising it.
For this reason, psychotherapy’ and psychotherapeutic counselling, are also referred to as ‘talking therapies’. This is simply because it involves talking about you and emotional upheaval you’re struggling to overcome, with a trained and experienced therapist. That might be anything from grief to anxiety to depression and even relationship difficulties or addiction.
HOW PSCHOTHERAPY WORKS
There is no single explanation as to how psychotherapy works. Each therapeutic relationship is tailored to suit your own individual needs, but the core objective of any life-impacting psychotherapy is to build a strong, therapeutic relationship between both you as the visitor and, in this case Claire, as your chosen specialist.
Through experience (and much research) we know that psychotherapy can treat any emotional traits from depression to obsessive-compulsive behaviour, eating disorders to post-traumatic stress.
RELATIONSHIPS
Possibly the key aspect of any quality psychotherapy is the relationship you form with your own therapist. It is this relationship with someone like Claire that is so important as it has to be built on trust and respect, with your specialist being non-judgemental as well as totally confidential in what takes place.
This has to be your ‘safe space’. With each session there will develop a unique relationship between you and your therapist and one where you will feel heard, acknowledged and seen for who you really are. As part of the process, you will inevitably take a way, processes of relating with other people in other relationships, so that these interactions also become healthier and more fulfilling.
